    RPE Face Fit Testing

    RPE Face Fit Testing

In the United Kingdom (UK), face fit testing is a crucial process that helps ensure the effectiveness of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) in preventing the inhalation of harmful airborne substances. It is a legal requirement under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations and the Control of Asbestos Regulations, which aim to protect workers from hazardous substances in the workplace.

A technique called face fit testing is used to evaluate how well the RPE’s facepiece seals against the wearer’s face. In order to reduce the possibility of contaminated air escaping into the mask and being inhaled by the wearer, the test’s goal is to make sure the RPE forms an airtight seal. This is crucial when dealing with potentially harmful compounds, such as airborne dust, gases, and particles, which can result in major health problems, such as cancer and respiratory disorders.

    What is included

Anyone who wears tight-fitting RPE — including disposable FFP3 masks or reusable half masks — must undergo face fit testing to ensure the equipment seals properly. This applies across a wide range of industries where workers may be exposed to hazardous substances.

    Common sectors include:

    • Construction and demolition
    • Healthcare and dentistry
    • Engineering and manufacturing
    • Waste management and cleaning
    • Laboratories and chemical handling

If your employees wear tight-fitting masks as part of their work, testing is legally required under COSHH regulations.

We carry out qualitative face fit testing, a method recommended for half-mask and disposable respirators. This involves the wearer performing a series of exercises while exposed to a harmless test agent (bitter or sweet-tasting aerosol) to check for leaks.

    During the session:

    • We inspect the RPE for suitability and condition
    • The wearer is trained in correct fitting and use
    • Movement and speech exercises are completed to detect seal integrity

If the wearer cannot detect the solution, the fit is considered adequate.

Face fit testing is not a one-time task. Re-testing is required when:

    • A new mask type or model is introduced
    • The wearer’s facial features change (e.g. significant weight loss, dental work, facial hair)
    • There are concerns about the existing fit

HSE recommends regular reviews and re-testing as part of your ongoing respiratory protection programme. Our team can help you schedule appropriate intervals and ensure continued compliance.

Protecting your staff, the right way

Face fit testing isn’t just a regulatory requirement — it’s a vital step in protecting your employees from long-term health risks. Without a proper seal, even the highest-grade mask offers little to no protection against airborne hazards.

At The First Principle, we make compliance straightforward. Our trained team ensures every test is carried out professionally, with clear guidance and proper documentation. We help you meet your legal obligations while promoting a culture of safety in your workplace.

    Your questions answered

    Common questions

Anyone who wears tight-fitting RPE, such as disposable FFP3 masks or reusable half masks, must be face fit tested to ensure the mask forms a proper seal.

Yes. It’s required under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations and the Control of Asbestos Regulations to ensure suitable and effective RPE is used.

We offer qualitative face fit testing, ideal for disposable and half-mask respirators. It uses a bitter or sweet solution to check for leaks during various movements.

Testing should be repeated if a new mask model is used, the wearer’s facial features change, or at regular intervals — usually every 1–2 years.

Absolutely. We provide on-site testing for businesses across Greater London, the South East, West Midlands, and East Midlands — with group bookings available.
